Club Otago Lunch - Julie Woods

14 October 2026

Join us for our final Club Otago lunch for 2026 for two hours of inspiring speakers, great food, networking and drinks, while supporting world-class medical research in Otago.

In 1997, when Julie Woods was told she would never see again, she thought her life had ended. Little did she realise it had only just begun…

Branded as that blind woman since 2007, Julie is now a professional speaker, author, advocate and coach, changing her life with two small words that took her from the couch to travelling the world.

She’s walked every street in Dunedin, self-published four books, visited 60 countries by the time she was 60 including the Seven Wonders of the World.

Julie has a dream to write 1 million names in braille which she will share with us, along with the two small words that took her off the couch to live an extraordinary life. As a journalist once wrote, “It’s impossible not to love Julie Woods,” and on October 14, you’ll find out why.

We’ll also hear the latest Foundation updates and an overview from our Face of Research, Associate Professor Mike Garrett from the Department of Anatomy, University of Otago. Mike will discuss research showing how both low- and high-protein diets during pregnancy can influence long-term health outcomes for offspring.
