Using advanced technology to improve the lives of people living with diabetes.

Otago Medical Research Foundation

The treatment of diabetes, especially type 1 diabetes, has undergone a technology revolution over the past 10-15 years. Automated insulin delivery and continuous glucose monitors are now the gold standard method of delivering life saving insulin and monitoring glucose levels.

Professor Wheeler and his team have been at the forefront of these developments investigating and helping develop both cutting edge next-generation systems and also working hard to promote access and equity to these systems in New Zealand and worldwide.

The Otago Medical Research Foundation have been a critical partner in this work, supporting the University of Otago Dunedin based diabetes technology research team with multiple grants and student research stipends over the years. This support has been vital to their efforts to improve the lives of people living with diabetes in New Zealand and beyond. These funds have been used to develop early project ideas that have often led on to larger national or industry funded work.
