The guest speaker at the year’s final Club Otago lunch, scheduled for Thursday, 29th October, will be Governor-General Sir Jeremiah ‘Jerry’ Mateparae, GNZM, QSO, KStJ.

The former Chief of Defence Force, Sir Jerry enlisted in the Regular Force of the New Zealand Army in 1972 and graduated from the Portsea Officer Cadet School in 1976. He served in both battalions of the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment and in the New Zealand Special Air Service.

His military experience included two peace support missions (in south Lebanon and Bougainville), taking joint command of the New Zealand forces attached to the United Nations transitional administration in East Timor, and a rising through the ranks to that of Chief of Defence Force, New Zealand’s senior uniformed military appointment, a positon he held from 2006 to 2011.

So what does a Governor-General do, how serious is the ISIS issue and what are his thoughts on the proposed new flag? All questions to be asked on October 29th.
