Warren Lees’ cricketing record is unlikely to be matched.
He played for Otago and New Zealand, he coached the Otago men’s and women’s sides, and he coached the New Zealand men’s and women’s teams.
Warren witnessed Peter Petherick’s hat trick on debut from 22 yards away, he scored 152 in just his third test, he was part of the legendary win over the West Indies at Carisbrook, saw Colin Croft smash into umpire Fred Goodall in Christchurch, and was part of the infamous underarm tour. He led Otago to more championships – first-class and one-day – than any other captain.
His New Zealand team enthused and engaged the country during the 1992 World Cup, and he was close by as the bomb blast in Sri Lanka in December that same year changed the face of New Zealand and international cricket forever.
Warren is our first Club Otago speaker for the year. With the 2019 Cricket World Cup set for the UK in June and July, Warren’s insight into the game – then and now – should not be missed.
